The Guardians – Red Deer Stags on the Isle of Skye

Some photographs mean more than others, and this will always be one of those for me.

I photographed these three magnificent red deer stags in my mum’s garden on the Isle of Skye, the day after her funeral.

They appeared together at the edge of the woodland and stood watching me, all three looking directly towards the camera. Against the dark trees behind them, with the winter bracken catching the light, it was an incredible sight.

Perhaps it was simply one of those wonderful wildlife encounters that happen when you’re lucky enough to spend time on Skye. But given the timing, this photograph will always feel rather special to me.

I called it The Guardians.
