Paula Beaumont Adventures explores Swaledale, Muker Meadows to Keld
11th July 2018
It was time for a little adventure! I love Muker in the Yorkshire Dales, home to one of my favourite campsites, Usha Gap. So quiet and pretty. I’d been meaning to photograph the very famous Muker meadows for a long time now. Filled with beautiful delicate buttercups and an array of other wild flowers as far as the eye can see.
Muker Meadows are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) The Meadows are an important concentration of twelve traditionally managed hay meadows and you must always stick to the footpath through the meadows as you walk up the valley towards Keld.
With the perfect spring weather and the iconic Yorkshire stone barns it’s the perfect place for a walk with your camera. I wanted a few clouds and blue sky to show the flowers and the hills of the Swaledale valley at their very best and the weather certainly didn’t disappoint
Starting at Muker, walk up behind the The Farmers Arms pub to the start of the walk. It’s around six miles and follows the river Swale most of the way. I walked up the left way towards Keld, stopping lots of times to chat to other walkers and take lots of photos.
Just before you get to Keld you’ll see the stunning Kidson Force waterfall where I stopped for a paddle and a break before carrying up to Keld and back over the river to walk down the other side towards Muker. It’s a beautiful circular walk thats pretty easy going, a few steep inclines. It took me five hours! Hahaha – I like to chat and take my time, I met some lovely folk along the route, paddled, had lunch high on a hill looking over the valley. I’m never in a rush on my days out! But you could easily do it in 2.5-3 hours. Once back in Muker don’t forget to call in at the fabulous Farmers Arms for a well deserved cold drink!
Here’s a link to the walk if you’d like to try it yourself – let me know if you do! https://where2walk.co.uk/yorkshire_dales/hay-meadows-at-muker/
