Discover the Waterfalls in Yorkshire: A Photographer’s Paradise

Yorkshire, with its stunning landscapes and picturesque vistas, is a dream destination for landscape photographers. As an award-winning landscape photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing some of the most breathtaking waterfalls this region has to offer. In this blog post, I’ll take you on a journey through some of my favorite waterfalls in Yorkshire, sharing my experiences and tips for photographing these natural wonders. You’ll also find links to purchase prints of these beautiful scenes from my Yorkshire Prints collection.

Aysgarth Falls: A Timeless Beauty

Aysgarth Falls, a triple flight of waterfalls on the River Ure, is one of Yorkshire’s most iconic and photographed sites. The Lower Falls will feature in next year’s Yorkshire calendar 2025. Great to visit all year round and sourounded by mature trees creating a stunning backdrop for the cascading water.

Scaleber Force: Autumn’s Silver Lining

Scaleber Force is a hidden gem, especially captivating in the autumn months. This secluded waterfall, nestled in the woods near Settle, earned me a Silver Bar Award from the Guild of Photographers. The combination of rich autumnal hues and the serene flow of the water makes for a perfect shot. To capture the essence of Scaleber Force, I often find myself knee-deep in the water, getting up close and personal with nature. The image look fabulous as a large canvas wall art.

Janets Foss, Malham:

One of Yorkshire much loved waterfalls, very popular with wild swimmers as it easy to get to, deep and very pretty! It lies between the village of Malham and Gordale Scar. This image was taken over 3 minuets. There was children playing in the water, so I put a 9 stop filter on to cut as much light as possible out of the image and opened the shutter for three minuets. Because the children were moving constantly it wiped them out of the picture! The third image below is from Gordale Scar, just above Janets Foss

Three Falls on the River Swale:

Swaledale is one of my favorite dales to photograph in, offering an abundance of natural beauty and tranquility. Three of my favourute waterfalls in Yorkshire are on the River Swale, Kisdon Force, East Gill Force, and Wain Wath Force, each have their unique charm. Kisdon Force, with its multi-tiered cascades, is best photographed from a low angle to capture the depth and layers of the falls. Take care getting to these falls! It’s a steep climb in and out! East Gill Force, set against a backdrop of lush greenery. This is probably the mosty popular falls, super easy to get to, high and very pretty. These falls are on the walk back to Muker from Keld. Wain Wath Force, with its powerful and dramatic flow, is ideal for wide-angle shots. At the side of the road is probably the most accessible of the three falls.

Cauldron Falls: A Hidden Wonderland

Cauldron Falls, located in the quaint village of West Burton, is another must-visit waterfall in Yorkshire. This enchanting fall is surrounded by a tranquil woodland setting, making it a peaceful spot for photography. The falls are particularly photogenic after a rainfall, when the water flows vigorously over the rocks.

Valley of Desolation: A Photographer’s Haven

Despite its ominous name, the Valley of Desolation in Wharfedale is a photographer’s haven. The secluded waterfall here is set amidst a rugged landscape, providing a dramatic contrast between the serene flow of water and the rocky surroundings.

Tips for Capturing Stunning Waterfall Photography

  1. Get Close and Personal: Don’t be afraid to wade into the water to find unique angles and perspectives. Some of the best shots are taken from within the stream or river, offering a closer view of the cascading water.
  2. Slow Down Your Shutter Speed: To achieve that silky smooth water effect, use a slow shutter speed. This technique allows the water to appear soft and fluid, adding a dreamy quality to your photographs.
  3. Avoid Sunny Days: Bright sunlight can create unwanted hot spots and harsh shadows. Cloudy or overcast days provide even lighting, ideal for waterfall photography.
