Camping in Scotland in Winter by Paula Beaumont
14th March 2022
Every January me and my lovely mum (Whos 75 years old BTW) camp in the highlands of Scotland for 10 days. My mum is a hardy sole, living on the ISle of Skye for 25 years her favourite saying is “there’s no such thing as bad weather just the wrong type of clothes” Or “if you don’t like what the weather is doing on Skye just wait five minutes” lol – she’s right the weather changes quickly up there and so does the light which is why I love to go and photograph it!
The two images above I took on the way to Glencoe and a perfect example on how quickly things change up there. A few seconds after I took the image on the right a slight breeze got up and the reflections instantly disappeared. I love a reflection photo and these have gone down amazingly at the markets I sell my photos at.
We started our trip near Oban and the first night in my tent was 12 degrees! In January, in Scotland! I’ve had it colder than that in August.
Another style of image I love in Scotland are the moody low cloud photos and in January you get plenty opportunity for this! Below are some of my favourites from the Jan trip.

The image on the right was taken just North of Torridon a lovely little village on the NC500 route and has a little camping field on the outskirts of the village you can use for a small donation. There’s some public loos and a hot shower in there too! Whilst enjoying some moody photography on the Torridon mountains I turned around to find this stag right behind me!
Apparently he is a regular in the carpark there and all the visitors feed him….. I don’t have a head in hands emoji on here but if I did I would post it now. So this stag relies on tourists to feed him, he’s not frightened of anyone or cars and just hangs about in the carpark on his own waiting to be fed. Pretty sad life if you ask me, he should be eating grass, new shoots, leaves, all good stuff for his gut and health not the crap tourists feed him. He’s a wild animal let him be wild not dependant on humans pretty please x
One thing that we love to do in Scotland is kayak, I only got mum in kayaking last year and she loves it! Here we are on Loch Garry with water like glass. It was a super chilly paddle but exhilarating and stunning!!
Eilean Donan Castle photo
I know it’s been photographed many times and will remain a favourite of mine Eilean Donan Castle. With the golden glow of early morning I decided to make the image from the other side to the “norm” and I love it.
Highland Cow photo with the Sottish mountains
Ton finish, a few of my favourites from Loch Carron, Glen Sheil, camping and Gairloch. I hope you’ve enjoyed some Scottish pictures and don’t forget they are available to buy as prints or canvas wall art in the shop.
