Another fabulous overland Adventure! Scottish Highlands and Islands!
29th July 2019
So in April Susan caught the ferry over from the Netherlands (again) lol for yet another of our awesome adventures – we call ourselves “Team Coddiwomple” The definition of coddiwomple is “to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination”, which I totally love! This time it was destination Scotland – I love Scotland and have been visiting for 35 years. Mum and dad made the bold move to the Isle of Skye around 25 years ago now so I try and visit every year.
First stop the list was Glen Etive, what a magnificent place this is! It’s one of the most stunning glens in Scotland in my opinion. Wonderful mountains, rivers, great camp spots and lots of deer (well most of the time – not for us this time!) both Susan and I have RTT’s (Roof Top Tents) which are super practical and you can have your bed ready in 1 minute. The only problem with this is the famous Scottish winds!!! We certainly weren’t expecting the 65mph winds we were hit with this first night – it was so bad we had to move the cars in the night to try and get some shelter – it was so strong the tents were actually closing!
After lots more exploring around Glen Etive we headed towards Glenfinnan. The famous Glenfinnan viaduct carries the railway to Glenfinnan Station across a 1,000 ft span, 100 ft above the ground. And you’ll probably know it as the viaduct from the Harry Potter films. We had a fabulous 6 mile walk here – the car park was crazy busy but the minute you head out the car park there’s literally no one around! The weather was crazy good for April too!
We stayed on a campsite one night near silver sands – what a stunning place. Deer roaming around and stunning clean deserted beaches! We don’t do many camp sites but this one was a bit special. here’s a link if you want to check it out. http://www.camusdarach.co.uk/
Next stop Skye… Skye will always be a special place. I’ve been going since I was five years old. I know pretty much every nook and cranny – Dad passed away here too, he now looks out to sea in the most beautiful church yard.
There’s a track I’d always wanted to drive on Skye, but please remember there’s no green lanes in Scotland – if you’re driving off road you’re driving on someones land! This track goes right along the coast for around 6 miles and ends at some abandoned villages. Anyway we put our detective caps on and found the land owner and asked permission to drive the track – whoop! He said yes…
The camp spot at the end of this track was pretty epic to say the least! I just loved camping here and looking at the old ruins from the 1840 clearances when new land owners literally invicted people from their homes – very sad but fascinating too.
After a fabulous boat ride in Elgol and a few miles walk around Loch Coruisk we picked up the honorary third member of team coddiwomple for a few days – my mum Cheryl! 🙂 She’s pretty awesome my mum – she’s 72 still goes off solo wild camping, she flies her drone for taking photos, lights fires and walks for miles – I want to be like her when I grow up lol

A visit to the Fairy Glenn and the Quiraing brought us to my favourite camp spot.
What a stunning place to camp! I just loved it here – the weather was perfect and the reflections to die for! I love a good reflection shot – here’s some of my favourites from there….
After a days walking we went back down the Elgol road to camp – what a stunning evening (please note we asked the land owner permission to camp here)
Time to say good bye to mum and the Isle of Skye (hey great traveller tip – there are showers in the public toilets at Kyle of Lochalsh just off Skye. We’d been off grid camping for a couple of weeks now so a hot shower was totally awesome!) and pick up our next Coddiwomple member for the next few days – Ian Brown from Highland All Terrain Ian runs a great business out of Kinlochlaggan in the Highlands – where he takes you out on the best of the best tracks that Scotland has to offer. He took us to some amazing places over the next few days – we had some crazy cool wild camps! So high up we were driving through snow – seeing arctic white hares….
The next few days we meandered slowly back down the country, lots of walks, cool single track roads – my mate going above and beyond and moving cow crap out of the way of our camping spot! hahahaha
All in All Scotland is a wonderful place – even better for me out of season – as I don’t care for busy roads and camp spots oh and midges too! Happy travels folks x
