Adventures in the Yorkshire Dales: A Photography Workshop to Remember

Hey, folks, grab your cameras and join me on an epic photography tuition day through the breathtaking landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales! I had a really wonderful day with Jeff having a one-to-one photography workshop, cruising in my beloved old Landrover Defender Norton.

 Our first stop was one of my favourite waterfalls that dot the Dales. With the roar of cascading water, we delve straight into capturing that wonderful smooth water effect. Showing Jeff how to slow the shutter down, learning the exposure triangle and using filters to help eliminate light to further slow the shutter for the perfect effect. The images were stunning, the light was perfect and it still had the wonderful brown and yellow autumnal colours in the leaves and grasses.

Next on our photography checklist: Highland Cows! These gentle giants with their shaggy coats and soulful eyes make for the perfect subjects against the backdrop of the rolling hills. Again the light was perfect and the cows super chilled. Highland cows are so popular I sell hundreds of images a year.

We venture further into the heart of the Dales, climbing a little higher onto the moors above Settle discovering hidden gems like limestone pavements adorned with resilient trees. We dump the Landy and head up on foot to photograph a wonderfully shaped hawthorn tree the sits in the limestone pavements. We were so lucky with the light, not bright sunshine but a lovely diffused winter light that lit the scene perfectly. Teaching Jeff about leading lines an how to compose the scene so it’s pleasing to the eye

No Yorkshire Dales adventure would be complete without paying homage to its iconic landscapes, including the majestic Yorkshire Three Peaks. Here we’re reminded of the raw, unbridled beauty of nature and the privilege we have to capture it through our photography.

Last but certainly not least, we round off our adventure at the awe-inspiring Ribblehead Viaduct. We were starting to loose the light but this architectural marvel serves as the perfect finale to our photography lesson through the Dales.
